S. Simão Village
The first stop will be at the magnificent xisto village, Casal de S. Simão. Perched on top of a hillside, the village overlooks the beauty of the huge cliffs, which surround the river of fresh and transparent water.
We will explore the village and take a walk along the walkways that surround the cliffs, enjoying the plants, trees, birds and all the beauty that nature has to offer.
After lunch, we will set off in the direction of Tomar to discover the city and the Convent of Christ, a World Heritage Site (UNESCO).
We will visit the historic centre of Tomar and the church of S. João Batista, which was built in the “Manuelino” style, the singular Portuguese architectural style of the 16th century.
We will also visit one of the oldest synagogues in Europe, the Tomar Sephardic Synagogue and its restored Mikveh.
The visit to the Convent will include a journey into the mysticism of the Order of the Temple.
Symbolism is found throughout the building and to understand the hidden meanings of every nook and cranny of the Convent is to understand the true mission of the Knights.
Headquarters of the Knights Templar Order for nearly seven hundred years, the Convent of Tomar has thousands of stories to tell.
